Introduction to Embroidery Floss and Needles
Embroidery is a craft that has stood the test of time, offering endless possibilities for creativity and personalization. At UrCustomHUB, we believe that understanding the basics of embroidery tools is the first step to mastering this beautiful art. In this post, we’ll introduce you to two fundamental components: embroidery floss and embroidery needles.
Embroidery Floss
Embroidery floss, also known as 6-stranded embroidery floss, is distinct from regular sewing thread. Its unique feature is its ability to separate easily into multiple strands. This intentional design allows you to choose the number of strands to use in your design, giving a unique texture to your piece.
More Strands = Thicker Lines
Depending on the effect you want to achieve, you can use the same number of strands throughout your embroidery pattern or mix it up to add depth and perspective. For instance, using 2 or 3 strands is a common practice. Typically, I use the same number of strands throughout a piece but will change it up to create a more textured and dynamic design.
Embroidery Needle
An embroidery needle is essential for hand embroidery. The sharp point of the needle allows it to pierce through the fabric, making stitching possible.
Choosing the Right Needle
Embroidery needles come in various sizes, differing in length, thickness, and eye size. It’s important to pick a needle with an eye large enough to accommodate the number of strands you plan to use. For example, if you usually stitch with all 6 strands, ensure the needle's eye is sufficiently large.
Needle sizes can vary based on the manufacturer, typically based on the needle's length or thickness. In most cases, the eye of the needle is proportional to these measurements.
Below is a visual guide to different strand counts using embroidery floss. This image can help you understand how the number of strands can impact the thickness and texture of your stitches:
At UrCustomHUB, we encourage you to experiment with different strand counts and needle sizes to find what works best for your projects. Whether you are creating detailed patterns or bold designs, the right tools can make all the difference.
